Elizabeth was 24 years old and working at the Atomic Energy Commission when a friend’s father offered to pay her travel expenses if would watch over his 18 year old son on a Freedom Ride from Nashville to Jackson. Elizabeth accepted and spent four weeks in Parchment Penitentiary.
Elizabeth worked for CORE and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party before becoming a teacher in Northern California. Bob Filner, the 18 year old boy she was asked to watch over, is today a member of the US House of Representatives.
